CB-XiT — the first CBRN ensemble certified to NFPA 1971

NFPA 1971 Certification CBRN OptionWhy a CBRN ensemble?
You think you're headed out on a routine call. But it ends up being far from routine. If it’s a release of CBRN agents, a standard turnout won’t help. But, the Janesville CB-XiT will.

Advantages of the CB-XiT
The CB-XiT is the first and only CBRN ensemble certified to the NFPA 1971, CBRN option. It buys you the time you need to escape from a hot zone whether you’re facing the dangers of exposure to sarin, anthrax or even nuclear particulates.

What makes the CB-XiT unique is that it looks and feels like a standard ensemble and is made to wear for structural firefighting activities. It has all the mobility and comfort features you’ve come to expect from Janesville®, but it delivers the added assurance of CBRN protection. In fact, CB-XiT’s protection factor is significantly higher than the level required by the NFPA 1971, CBRN option.

Lion’s CB-XiT ensemble positions the W.L. Gore ChemPak® CBRN barrier deep within its unique Shadowbox composite to offer the very best chance for continuing protection.

FAQ
How do I know if I need a CBRN turnout ensemble?
This depends on your department’s risk assessment. If the feasibility exists, we recommend you test the CB-XiT in actual firefighting situations before committing to purchase.

Will the turnout alone provide CBRN protection?
You must wear the entire ensemble. Protection is provided by all of the elements of the system working together (turnout, hood, gloves, boots and SCBA). That’s why the only certification is for an ensemble. There can be no substitutions.

How long can I wear the CB-XiT in a contaminated area?
The garment is designed to enable fire fighters to escape a contaminated environment when encountering terrorism incidents. The criteria for the standard are not intended to provide for reentry.

What is a CBRN terrorism agent?
Chemical terrorism agents include solid, liquid and gaseous chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals.

  • Chemical warfare agents include, but are not limited to, GB (sarin), GD (soman), HD (sulfur mustard), VX and specific toxic industrial chemicals, such as chlorine and amomina.
  • Biological agents are bacterial, viruses or the toxins derived from biological material. The CBRN ensemble protects against biological particles dispersed as aerosols and liquid-borne pathogens. The ensemble does not provide any protection from ionizing radiation, such as gamma and x-rays, other than to keep the actual radiological particulate from direct skin contact.
  • Radiological particulates – the CBRN ensemble protection is for blocking or filtering airborne particulate matter and liquid and solid aerosols, but not for radiological gases or vapors.

How long will the CB-XiT last?
If the garment has been exposed, it cannot be worn again and must be disposed. In terms of durability during structural firefighting activities, CBRN protection is an innovation in firefighting, so no long-term durability data for the ChemPak® barrier is available. CBRN barrier performance after use is not covered by warranty.
